Several years ago, a naturist acquaintance in his 70s showed me a recent photo of himself cross-country skiing in the buff in Ontario. It seemed to be a bright day, and I’m guessing it wasn’t particularly cold — at least, cold from a Canadian perspective. Anything around 0 C (32 F) on a winter day here is positively balmy (it has been averaging minus-15 to minus-25 C here for the past five days).
I thought of the hearty skier yesterday while I was watching a Women’s Professional Hockey League (WPHL) game on television and musing whether it might be possible to stage a naked (or nearly naked) hockey game — on an indoor rink, if not outdoors.
I wondered if anyone has ever tried it. Obviously, it would have to be a much tamer version with, say, a Nerf ball instead of a puck and no physical contact. In theory, a naked street hockey game in warmer climes wouldn’t be out of the question, either.
(OK, maybe I’m just a hockey-crazy Canuck experiencing the first stages of annual winter cabin fever right about now. But why couldn’t it be done, I mused.)
Naturists have long participated in personal and team sports activities in the buff — though I only know of that one naked cross-country skier. In warmer times, there’s volleyball, tennis, pickleball, badminton, croquet, cycling, running, swimming, boating and more, several of them popular activities in various naturism settings.
But what about organized team sports like basketball, football, baseball, soccer, cricket and field hockey? And, yes, games on ice such as hockey, curling, speed skating, broomball — and downhill and cross-country skiing on moderate late-winter days when the sun is warm and the snow is still glistening.
Imagine if there were naked leagues and events in those sports. Think the “National Nude Hockey League.” . . . You gotta know that would raise naturism’s profile. And how much fun it would be for the participants!
(Smiles . . . Well, we can dream on such a winter’s day, eh? It’s not all about goin’ to California.)
There is a sport for just about everyone, I think, no matter skill levels, and I bet people soon forget they are naked while playing games like volleyball. Indeed, people may find their skill level is a tad better without the weight of clingy, sweaty clothes and bulky gear.
I’ve played some pickup basketball in an indoor gym at naturism events, and would love to play on a team in a naked league. Basketball has always been my best sport — though, I wasn’t bad at playing horseshoes when I was a kid, either.
How about you, dear reader? What naked sports activities are you into?
And have you ever gone cross-country skiing in the buff?
I don't know about hockey but pickleball would be a possibility.
I've never skated or skied in my entire life but I have run around in the snow a bit in Michigan. Streaked a strip mall in subzero F weather once on a dare - think I was 16. It was New Year's Eve, IIRC.
I have freehiked in weather in the high 30s F and if you are working hard, the heat output can neutralize the cold. The instant I stop, clothing becomes necessary.
i live in southern usa. i would love to do any sport in the nude! if,, it is not cold or indoors.. i may have an opportunity to play some naked pickleball, and have run a 5k nude.
